The Transportation Improvement Program

Often referred to as the "TIP," this is the list of approved significant projects that will (probably!) get funded and built. A project NOT on the TIP list won't be built, at least not with federal transportation money. Get a copy of your community's list and look it over. This will give you an idea of what is coming in the next few years. You MAY be able to get bike and pedestrian features added to some of the projects on the list, especially if those projects are identified as being in the early stages (e.g., "preliminary design" or "right of way acquisition").

For example, things like sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks should be included in all major street projects. If they aren't, then work to get them in. Even street "overlays" (where they put a new asphalt surface down) can be a very significant project for you. When you have new asphalt, it's much easier to stripe bike lanes than when the asphalt is old and there are stripes already.

Important: Get a copy of the schedule for annually updating the list. There will be dates by which projects must be proposed, dates for public comment, dates for adoption, and so on. Insert yourself early in that process by suggesting projects to be included in the TIP list.
