The Subdivision Regulations

When developers plan a new subdivision, they follow certain rules. These are your town's subdivision regulations. If your community's rules say developers will include sidewalks along all residential streets, it's likely you will see sidewalks along all new residential streets. Simple as that. In some cases, developers may ask for a "variance," which would let them off the hook. But unless this process gets out of hand, new subdivisions will generally include sidewalks.

You may find that your town's code does NOT require sidewalks, in which case you should work to change the regulations. Start with your local bike/ped coordinator (if your city has one), or with a staff member at your local planning office.

Find out when the next revision is planned for the regulations. That will be the best time to propose major changes.
