Child Education

Child Education | In-Class Training | Learning At Home

Good bicycle and walking education begins at home, and is reinforced by school lessons and events such as bike rodeos. You'll find resources for all three types of education in this section.

Children should receive an early introduction to the skills needed to ride bicycles safely, using on-bike training sessions. Many children already bicycle but do so in dangerous ways. Age-appropriate safety skills can be taught to bicyclists of all ages. In addition, bicycling properly is something they can do with friends or alone and it doesn't require special fields or courts. Good walking habits can be best taught by walking with an adult who follows good safety procedures and can point out the use of crosswalks, walking on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic, and how pedestrian signals work.

Some ask if schools are an appropriate place to teach bicyclist education. However, with the growing "obesity epidemic" among our youth, the need to teach active skills like bicycling is clear. It is one of the best aerobic forms of exercise available -- and kids really enjoy bicycling.

In addition, bicycling lessons can often be used to accomplish a variety of seemingly-unrelated educational goals. Some enthusiastic instructors have used kids' interest in bicycling to teach history, math, and physics, for example.

It's important to match the materials being taught to the age-level you're working with. The 9-year-old needs to learn that the "driveway rideout" is one of the most prevalent causes of accidents in his or her age group, while the younger cyclist may only be able to grasp the ideas of looking back before turning, and the importance of wearing a helmet.
